Knowing the history of Fertilia also helps to understand its architecture

Small town north of Alghero with beautiful beaches.

Just east of Fertilia, the remains of an ancient Roman bridge still stand at Stagno di Calich. The bridge was part of the road that led from the Roman settlement in Bosa to Turris Lybissonis (Porto Torres). It was used for centuries and was restored in the Middle Ages.

Fertilia is a small hamlet of Alghero on the sea with a beautiful beach. Visiting this village really feels like taking a leap into the 1930s with the classic rationalist architecture of the period. The village of Fertilia was officially born on 8 March 1936 with the laying of the foundation stone of the parish church, by the Ferrarese Colonization Agency, established on 7 October 1933 by the fascist regime to respond to the excess population of the Province of Ferrara and reduce social tensions. After the first arrivals of emigrants from Ferrara, the outbreak of the Second World War effectively paralyzed the colonization work, so that most of the buildings remained effectively unused. During the war, Fertilia became one of the concentration camps for Slavs, mostly Croatians. After the Second World War, however, it was the exiles from Istria and Dalmatia who populated the village, making it a microcosm similar to the Catalan-speaking one of Alghero. Inheriting the Venetian tradition of the new arrivals, the village was dedicated to San Marco and there stands a winged lion, his symbol, right in the center of the belvedere. A peculiarity of the village is that all the streets and squares recall historical places or events of the Veneto and Venezia Giulia. In 1957 the bell tower (22 metres) was added which bears clear references to similar Venetian structures: the upper part in fact recalls the bell tower of the Basilica of San Marco in Venice.
