Cordovado is a town of about 3,000 inhabitants which is part of the province of Pordenone, in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages: its main monuments are the Cathedral and the Castle.

Built on a prehistoric "castelliere" and a subsequent Roman settlement, the castle of Cordovado was built around the eleventh century to defend the territory from the raids of the Hungarians. The favorable geographical position of the fortification, located near a ford of the Tagliamento river (hence the toponym “curtis-vada”) made it assume considerable importance over time, so much so that it became a subsidiary summer residence of the bishops of Concordia. In the sixteenth century, after the collapses caused by the violent earthquake of 1511, the current palace was built on the foundations of the ancient manor - Villa Piccolomini Freschi - of which the Freschi di Cuccanea counts and later the Piccolomini counts of Siena became owners by succession. . The two shielded towers and part of the very well preserved walls remain of the original structure of the castle.
