Splendid alpine lake above Champorcher passing by the Dondena refuge

It used to be a sheet metal bivouac that has been replaced by this beautiful, well-furnished, unattended chalet. It's a good location for continuing toward Lake Glasier or Lake Medzove and then descending to hike around. Continuing down the valley, you can see the Tersiva peak, already 3,500 meters high, on the right.

A nice ride even on a gravel bike; the road is very dusty and sandy due to heavy vehicles working at altitude, but still easy to ride. The last 2 km or so before the lake have 3-4 killer sections due to the combination of steepness and rocks. Congratulations to anyone who manages to stay on the bike (without a motor); that wasn't my case.

Arrival time is 7:30 PM (dinner time). In the morning, rooms can be vacated at 9:30 AM. It's located along the mule track leading to Lake Miserin, making it very convenient. The facility is spacious, with both smaller rooms and mixed dormitories. They have showers, unlike other refuges in the area, and this is a plus. Good food and very friendly service. Prices are average for the area: a dorm with half board costs €56 per person, a private room €70 per person.

The Miserin refuge and the lake, the large church in the pasture give this place a mystical aspect.

The bivouac is the most well-stocked I have ever seen. The most important information: it has a kitchen with gas and tap water (not controlled), it has an external fountain, also not controlled. BE VERY CAREFUL, in winter there is no water, you have to either get it downstream, i.e. in Fenis, or use the water from the many streams (if not frozen) and boil it. It has a working stove and lots of wood. It has blankets and pillows that can be used on each of the 20 bunk beds.

Path collapsed in various places. The bridge before the farmhouse of the alp is destroyed. I did not go further due to bad weather but eventually the only way would be to go down and go up the banks of the river, which have widened considerably. Recommended only for experts, at the moment that after the flood at the end of June it has not yet been fixed.

The Sella mountain hut is located in the Gran Paradiso mountain range, in the middle of Italy's most famous national park. The Lauson area in which the mountain hut is located is, thanks to its location, continuously covered in snow from November to May and offers alpine downhill skiers one of the most impressive opportunities to climb and cross the Gran Paradiso mountain range. The mountain hut is a comfortable one-story, brick double structure. One of the buildings consists of an old, but now modernized, hunting lodge of King Vittorio Emanuele II.
