Border pass between Italy and Switzerland, once an important route for smuggling and partisan warfare in the area. On the Italian side, the trail is easily accessible by mountain bike, although gravel riding is also a challenge, especially along the last two kilometers from Giovo. The pass is located at an altitude of 2,000 meters, and just below is the refuge of the same name. A stunning setting, largely untouched by human activity.

Open from June to September, this very welcoming refuge is located a few meters below the pass of the same name. The last 2 km are very difficult for gravel bikes, with a very rough road. The final section becomes paved with large stones, with gradients always above 10°. Stunning view and a large selection of snacks for those arriving.

my first bivouac, i'm gonna remember it for sure

I went up during the day and met some guys along the final ramp who had spent the night there and were returning to the valley. They told me that some of them had gone up the previous evening in the dark and without a flashlight in gym shoes (with snow from 1900 m) and had not identified the signs indicating the direction of the last traverse to the left and continued towards the walls above behind the bivouac. Only the luck that there were other people inside the bivouac with lights on allowed them to identify the shelter for the night and avoid calling for help... Let's hope it served as a lesson not to go around at night, poorly equipped and without a flashlight. In any case, when I arrived at the bivouac I discovered with regret that 2 bags full of waste (including organic waste) had been abandoned and the beds left in disarray with blankets and pillows in bulk. Perhaps the geniuses thought that since it is a freely accessible structure they could mistreat it. I won't say anything else...

The Zeb bivouac is a wonderful recently built bivouac, located on the Alta Via of the Larian mountains but also reachable from the Dosso Valley. The bivouac is always open, but don't be scared if you can't open the door, the handle must be raised and not lowered! Next to the bivouac there is a fountain with delicious flowing water, inside the bivouac there are many stoves but remember to bring a spare canister, also an offer for those who keep the paths accessible and the structure is certainly welcome, Inside there is a box where you can leave your offering.

The San Jorio Refuge is a former financial police barracks now used as a refuge. Below are the openings for 2023: June 18th opening party. From 19 June always open until 10 September. On weekends until the end of October.
