A few kilometers from the town of Alvito, among the mountains bordering Abruzzo, there is the so-called Fossa Maiura (815 m), a karst depression that almost forms a natural amphitheater: it is a gigantic sinkhole about 100 meters deep and about 3 km in circumference, in the shape of an inverted truncated cone with a perimeter of more than a kilometer. The lake of Posta Fibreno is part of the homonymous protected natural area and extends for 0.287 km². The lake is fed by several tributaries, but the water flows slowly. The lake of Posta Fibreno or della Posta, a nature reserve, is one of the most beautiful, characteristic and unspoiled natural oases in all of central Italy. Included in the green Valle di Comino, this huge source of pure water, coming from the slopes of the nearby mountains of the Abruzzo National Park, gives life to the icy and clear Fibreno river. Singular peculiarities of the lake are the floating island and the ancient boat with a flat bottom. The nature reserve Lago di Posta Fibreno is a protected natural area located in the municipality of Posta Fibreno, in the province of Frosinone.
