The polish were the real heroes of that time, because it was there effort that made the final breakthrough possible. Due to them, it was possible to bring up tanks to the monastery. This war cemetery is to honour all their losses.

These are left-behind tanks that were transformed into a monument to remember, what actually happened here in WWII.

The Monument, an obelisk dedicated to fallen soldiers, is located inside the Polish military cemetery of Montecassino. This cemetery, designed by the architect Pietro Rogacien, is one of the five war cemeteries in the Cassino area. The others are the Italian cemetery in Mignano Monte Lungo, German in the hamlet of Caira, French in Venafro, and the Commonwealth cemetery in Cassino.

The western peak of Mount Cairo is 1625m high and is the last western cove of the Mountain.

Mount Cairo, formerly called Mons Clarius, is 1669m high. Clarius is another name for Apollo, and in fact here once there was a temple dedicated to him - today instead we can find the Abbey of Montecassino in its place.
