This castle can also be reached from the road that leads from Cassino to Montecassino. The fortification, which dominates the city from a steep cliff (193 m above sea level), was built around the middle of the 10th century by the abbot of Montecassino Aligerno, to defend the abbey.

The Monument, an obelisk dedicated to fallen soldiers, is located inside the Polish military cemetery of Montecassino. This cemetery, designed by the architect Pietro Rogacien, is one of the five war cemeteries in the Cassino area. The others are the Italian cemetery in Mignano Monte Lungo, German in the hamlet of Caira, French in Venafro, and the Commonwealth cemetery in Cassino.
