Review of Sperlonga and the beaches

The Museum was specifically built to house the monumental sculptural groups found in thousands of fragments at the end of the 1950s in the famous Grotto that opens onto the sea, a characteristic element of a vast residential complex usually identified with the praetorium, or palace, owned by the emperor Tiberius.

Four main groups have been identified so far, depicting the exploits of Ulysses: the blinding of Polyphemus by the hero and some companions, the attack of the monster Scylla on the ship and the killing of six companions suffocated by the coils of snakes, the abduction of the Palladium from the Trojan temple of Athena by Ulysses and Diomedes, and finally the so-called Pasquino, in which Ulysses dragging the body of Achilles has recently been recognized.

The small chapel of San Rocco, from the 15th century, is at the center of a dispute between the Scalfati family, the first owners of the Palace that houses the church, the municipality of Sperlonga and the Riviera d'Ulisse Park Authority. The chapel is opened every year on the day of San Rocco, on August 16th the portal of this pink church opens, decorated in a humble way and preserved in the same state for many years.

It is a part of the first building, a monastery, built in the old town by Benedictine monks in 1100 AD. A mural covering the white walls on one side of the small square will catch your attention. It almost looks like an old comic book, with different scenes that tell the story of the pirate invasion in 1534 through drawings and verses. The corsair had been commissioned by the Ottoman sultan Suleiman the Magnificent to bring him the best Italian treasures and kidnap the most beautiful Italian girl: Princess Giulia Gonzaga. Born in Modena, she lived in Fondi after marrying Count Vespasiano Colonna. Barbarossa destroyed everything he found in his path. When he ordered some Sperlongans to show him the way to the princess's castle in Fondi, he told them that if they did so he would spare their families and their homes. They didn't think twice and took him to Fondi. Fortunately, when the pirates reached the city, Princess Giulia was no longer there. It is said that her faithful servants had warned her in time and she was able to escape through a secret tunnel in her castle. Giulia was beautiful, yes, but also intelligent!
