Lago Santo, also known to South Tyroleans as "Holy Lake" or "Heiligensee", is located in Trentino shortly after the provincial border in the Cembra Valley. Lago Santo owes its name to a legend. According to this, the property on which the lake is now located was the subject of dispute between several heirs. One of the heirs, out of resentment, wanted the property to be turned into a lake. Whereupon, according to legend, water rose from the ground and even threatened to flood the nearby village of Cembra. The villagers therefore set off for the property. The priest is said to have thrown the Madonna's ring to the ground, whereupon the water calmed down. Since then the place has been called “the holy lake” or Lago Santo. The lake is around 250 meters long and around 200 meters wide, with a depth of 14 m at its deepest point. It is a popular bathing lake, especially in summer, and the many small summer huts show that some residents of the Adige Valley like to retreat to cooler regions in the hot months. The Albergo Lago Santo is located directly on the lakeshore and is also a good place to stop off. Lago Santo can also be reached by car from the Cembra Valley.
