Founded in 1938 during the fascist mining era, Carbonia is one of Sardinia's youngest cities and owes its name to the coal from the Sulcis basin. Today, it preserves an interesting heritage of industrial archaeology, such as the Grande Miniera di Serbariu (Great Mine of Serbariu), transformed into a museum and cultural center with visitable galleries and exhibition spaces dedicated to the miners' lives. The town center, designed according to the rationalist principles of the time, also offers a lively cultural scene with theaters, exhibitions, and festivals dedicated to the memory of mining.
