Beautiful area with great views.

The San Giovanni Mine towers above the town of Iglesias, nestled among the limestone hills of Marganai. Active since the 19th century, it was one of the most important mines in the Sulcis region for innovation and production capacity. Today, amidst old washeries and abandoned tunnels, the area retains considerable historical and natural charm. Panoramic trails with views of the town and the coast depart from here, and nearby is the evocative Santa Barbara Cave, considered one of Sardinia's most precious geological treasures.

In front of the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Buon Cammino, two stone markers mark the official start of the Santa Barbara Mining Trail. Carved with the words "Buon Cammino," they greet those setting out on the 500-kilometer trek through the mines, sea, and mountains of Sulcis.

Tunnel temporarily closed due to risk of falling material/collapse - detour required

The tunnel was renovated in 2023 by the Santa Barbara Mining Trail Foundation, and a lighting system was also installed. Please note: For safety reasons, the tunnel is temporarily closed. We invite all pilgrims to visit the Normann Mining Village. (Last updated: October 2025)

The laveria La Marmora is a former processing plant for zinc ore, which was mined in the Iglesiente until the 1970s. It is one of the greatest industrial monuments in the Iglesiente. There are other witnesses to mining in Nebida, and there is an old shaft above the town. In the area there are old mines "s'acquq resi", which were in operation until the 1980s.
