The view from this spot allows you to see two highlights at once: Directly in front of you, the water surface of the "Rodder Maar" glitters, a popular destination for hikers or walkers, and from the wooded mountain in the background rises the (rebuilt) tower of the Olbrück, also a striking landmark of this region.

"East of Oberdürenbach lies the former basalt cone "Steinberg" (Steimerich), one of the three tertiary volcanoes in the Brohl valley. The quality of the basalt rock was ideal for road construction (cobblestones), as track ballast or as basalt chippings. As early as 1870 there were interested parties who considered industrial mining of this natural treasure. In the 1920s, Steinhandel Rauen AG from Mühlheim/Ruhr acquired the concession to operate the quarry on the Steinberg in order to mine the coveted natural stone on a large scale. For this purpose, the company built a large gravel works in Oberzissen in 1924. At first the material was transported there by horse and ox carts. From 1925 onwards, a practical connection between the quarry and the gravel works was created by building a cable car. The stone material was transported on to the Rhine port in Brohl by the Brohltalbahn. From Brohl, the building materials for road construction, for bank reinforcements on rivers, canals and the sea were transported by ship or Reichsbahn to destinations in Germany and abroad. After a short time, the hilltop had disappeared. Over the years, the workers created a crater almost 75 m deep with their pneumatic chisels. In the process, they came across two springs that poured over 30 cubic meters per day. These masses of water had to be pumped out every day before work began. During the Second World War, work on the Steimerich was stopped. In a very short time, the quarry filled up with spring water. This created a lake about one hectare in size with a water depth of up to 30 m. Even during the war, the clean water was used for bathing. The idea of reopening the quarry in the 1950s was quickly abandoned. The Rauen company preferred to invest in the existing quarry on the Hannebacher Ley..." << The Children's Rights Trail >> "A discovery tour of children's rights - The Schalkenbach Rainbow School is committed to children's rights. Over three years, we created sculptures and artworks on children's rights. The result was an entire children's rights trail, which was inaugurated in November 2014, just in time for the 25th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. On the ten-kilometer circular discovery trail, which starts at the Schalkenbach Rainbow School, children's rights can be explored on foot or by bike. At various themed stations, children have the opportunity to learn about their rights actively and playfully. The project was funded by the action program "Child-Friendly Rhineland-Palatinate - Politics for Children with Children" - Children's Rights Week around World Children's Day on September 20, 2014, on the right to participation (Article 12 of the UN Convention)." https://www.grundschuleschalkenbach.de/der-kinderrechtepfad

"On a hill above the town, the people of Dedenbach have built a handsome barbecue hut. Because of the fantastic view, they gave it the descriptive name "Schauinsland". Just a few meters from the hut, an old basalt cross stands, somewhat hidden in the bushes. Like the many other stone crosses in the area, this "plague cross" is a reminder of the terrible conditions in the 17th century. At that time, those who died of the plague were always buried outside of the towns to prevent the disease from spreading." http://osteifel-aktiv.de/40839/237301.html
