The foundation stone is located in the base area, to the right of the side entrance to the church. This church in Reifferscheid (Ahrweiler district) was dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The name (from the Hebrew language) means "Who is like God?" He is often depicted—in paintings or as a statue—with a flaming sword, occasionally with a lance. Michael is—along with Raphael and Gabriel, and occasionally Uriel—one of the three or four archangels who (according to human belief) occupy the highest rank in the heavenly hierarchy of angelic beings. Their common feast day in the calendar of saints is September 29th.

Within sight of the church in Winnerath, at the crossroads, stands a shrine to the saint. "Matthias is counted among the apostles because the lot fell on him. He replaces Judas Iscariot in the list of the Twelve. It's about the number twelve. At the beginning of his public ministry, Jesus had twelve apostles, one of whom fell away from him and betrayed him. The people of Israel were founded by the twelve sons (and tribes) of Jacob; the new people of God is built on the foundation of the apostles. ... Empress Helena brought the relics of Matthias to Trier, so there is also an apostle's grave on our side of the Alps, to which many people still make pilgrimages today.
