In front of the Simbach Inn Bridge, the Inn god Aenus, a modern bronze sculpture by the sculptor Dominik Dengl, greets passers-by today - at least those who come from the Bavarian side. Aenus is sticking his backside out towards the Austrians, which earned the artist Dengl some criticism when it was installed in 2008. In the meantime, the waves have calmed down. What only a few people know: a representative bridge portal stood at this spot until 1945. The old bridge was built from granite between 1892 and 1894 and had a five-arched iron structure as the superstructure. Through one of the curved alleys you reach the large town square, which already had these dimensions when the town was founded. On the lower town square there are still a considerable number of Gothic houses, with their narrow fronts, high pointed gables and rear buildings that cannot be seen from the square. Since these houses have only been changed a little, we can still find the narrow, often quite winding staircases inside. With a few exceptions, the middle town square was largely destroyed in the great town fire in 1874. On the east side in particular, the high gable walls had to be torn down and the roofs turned 90 degrees. On the upper town square we find the houses of the once wealthy cloth makers and linen weavers. The houses have wide fronts, the windows are framed by delicate window frames and the interior of these houses has wide staircases and corridors, as well as rooms with some very beautiful stucco ceilings. At 552 m, the Schellenberg is the highest elevation in Lower Bavaria south of the Danube. At the foot of the house lies the Inn Valley with the Bavarian towns of Simbach am Inn, Kirchdorf, Ritzing, Julbach and the Austrian towns of Braunau, Ranshofen, Neukirchen and many more.
