Pramaggiore Bivouac Hut, 1,812 meters. The usual ascent route to the hut is CAI trail 366, which starts from the Settimana Valley. The trail climbs steeply in switchbacks, skirting the Col de Post, descends to ford the Ciol de Pess stream, and then steeply climbs the wooded slope until it emerges beneath the meadows of the plateau where the hut is located. Just before the hut, on the right, a small pulpit holds a stainless steel statue of the Madonna, commemorating all the young people from the parishes of Azzano Decimo and Pramaggiore who have passed away.

The hardest hill in Europe, a title that may not correspond to the absolute truth, but which was not assigned by chance; probably the hardest climb ever faced by the Great Cycling. If you want to face this climb I think you know what you are getting into... I can only wish you good luck and assure you that the satisfaction it gives is unique

The summit of Mount Pramaggiore, 2478 m, can be reached via CAI path 366 up to Forcella Pramaggiore, and then via a trail with red markings on inclined slabs and a trail with unstable gravel, along the normal route up to the crest and to the summit, with first and second grade passages.

A wonderful place that invites you to linger. On one side, there are views of a breathtaking plateau with ponds whose water level changes depending on the season. From the saddleback, there are breathtaking views in all directions and into the valley towards Sauris di Sopra.

We had lunch here after a pleasant walk from Sauris di Sotto. Everything was delicious and the owners were kind and easy-going, I was positively impressed by the fact that they use many hand-picked wild herbs!

Watch out for Casera Pramaggiore summer closure! It's used from May to mid-September for animals' pasture and therefore not available for hikers' use.

Basic overnight accommodation on the AV6. At least our room was very small with bunk beds, but otherwise okay. Very good dinner!

Trekking e-bike tour from Val Pesarina recommended, shop in the rifugio after 1200 meters of altitude from Prato. Overnight was there in Casa del Popolo. Departure to Sauris is a dream.

The Monster. The Kaiser. Call it what you want, what is considered one of the hardest climbs in Europe has many nicknames. Simply the Zoncolan. The Hell of climbs, an extremely fitting epithet also because it marks the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri. “Abandon all hope, ye who enter here,” reads a banner at the start of the climb. It reads when you enter the Monster from the Ovaro side, while tomorrow the Giro d’Italia will reach the top of the Zoncolan along the “soft” side of Sutrio. Soft is in quotation marks because we are still talking about a thrilling climb, which will crucify the legs of many cyclists and will redraw the general classification. The crucial moment will be reached after having left behind 193.3 kilometers and also the demanding Forcella di Monte Rest (10.5 km at 5.9% average gradient). But what are the harsh slopes of the Zoncolan? They are 14.1 km at an average gradient of 8.5%. Total difference in altitude of 1199 meters, from 531 meters above sea level in Sutrio to 1730 meters above sea level at the summit. The first half kilometer is substantially flat, then it starts to get terribly serious and 9 km begin with an average gradient of 8.3%, very constant (there are peaks above 9% and occasionally it drops to just over 7%). After 9.5 km of climbing, the road flattens out slightly near the Rifugio Moro: it is 1500 meters at an average gradient of 4.5% where you will have to try to catch your breath before a nightmare finale. The last 3 km, in fact, are even at an average gradient of 13%! It never drops below double figures. The partials, for every 500 meters: 10.4%, 13.2%, 11.2%, 14.2%, 11.4%, 18.8% in the last 500 m! Diabolical, there are no other words to describe it. The maximum gradient? It makes you jump: 27%, with 1 km to go. You could fall over. You will need legs of steel, this is where history is made
