Sigmundskron Castle is located south of Bolzano, above the Adige River. The castle has changed hands and names several times over the centuries. Before Sigmundskron, the castle was called Firmian. The current owner, Reinhold Messner, also calls the castle ruins that, more precisely MMM Firmian (Messner Mountain Museum). The MMM is a project with six locations in Tyrol.

Sigmundskron Castle sits enthroned on a rock at a strategically important location. It is a symbolic landmark for the South Tyroleans. On November 17, 1957, approximately 35,000 South Tyroleans from all valleys and regions gathered at Sigmundskron Castle. They protested for more rights. The castle has become a symbol of South Tyrol's autonomy. Reinhold Messner, who was born in Brixen in 1944, therefore shows a strong connection to this castle in his homeland.

Überetsch cycle path: Bozen - Eppan – Kaltern The cycle route connects the city of Bolzano with the wine-growing region between Eppan and Kaltern and with Lake Kaltern From Bolzano the route leads along the Eisack south to the “Meran - Eppan” junction. Here the path follows the Etsch for a few km to the north, then it goes to Eppan/Kaltern over a half-timbered bridge. Here, under Sigmundskron Castle, the path begins to climb slightly. The Überetscher Railway used to run at this point. The cycle path winds up through the wine country between Girlan and Frangart, passes through a few tunnels and finally, after an underpass, reaches St. Michael. From the former St. Michael Eppan train station, we continue south, the path runs parallel to the street until we reach the “Kreuzweg” settlement. Built in the 13th century, almost burnt down to the foundations in the 15th century and restored in the 1970s, Boymont Castle is now a popular destination in the Eppan castle region. In the inner courtyard there is a cozy castle tavern with a bowling alley, which is open in summer.
