Beautiful old hut right after the Mendel Pass (approx. 20 min)... So it's more of a stop on the way back from Monte Roen.

The small houses (sleeping 1-8 people) are available for rent. This provides an uninterrupted view of the Rosengarten, Peitlerkofel, and other peaks. Anyone with the necessary cash can spend a wonderful time here.

The Mendelbahn was put into operation on October 19, 1903. The Überetscherbahn joint-stock company had the cable car built, whose president was Sigismund Schwarz (1849-1919) from Bolzano and vice president Andreas Freiherr Di Pauli (1851-1927) from Kaltern. The project was written by engineer Emil Strub (1856-1909) from Switzerland. The facility was built for tourist purposes. The cable car is 2.374 kilometers long and overcomes a height difference of 854 meters between the valley station in St. Anton and the mountain station at the Mendel Pass. The maximum gradient of the cable car in the upper section is 64 percent. At the time of its opening, the Mendelbahn was the funicular with the longest route and the greatest height difference in a single section in the world, the steepest passenger funicular on the European continent and the first electric funicular in Austria. Particularly interesting from a structural point of view are the two viaducts, the two tunnels, the five curves, the two-track siding in the middle of the route, the two lifting bridges and the staircase for getting off at the mountain station. The railway was completely renovated between 1984 and 1988.

With a 64% gradient, you'd hope the technology is sound. Relief: the railway was designed by a Swiss engineer, Emil Strub. Opened in 1903, the Mendelbahn was the first electrically operated railway in Tyrol and the steepest and longest continuous funicular railway in Europe. The journey to the Mendel Pass is an experience in itself. And the uplifting panoramic view over the Etsch Valley and the South Tyrolean lowlands is just as breathtaking!
