The Visconti Citadel in Bergamo Alta is a quadrangular fortress built in the 14th century by Bernabò Visconti to consolidate his dominion over the territory and control the city. Urgnano Castle, or Rocca Albani, has a long and complex history, beginning in the 14th century as a Visconti fortification, with defensive and strategic functions along the main communication routes. After being the scene of clashes between factions, it passed to the Colleoni family, then to the Longhi family, and finally, in the 16th century, to the Albani counts. The latter transformed it into a stately home, retaining ownership until the 19th century. Acquired by the municipality in the 20th century, it now hosts cultural activities.

It's a steep climb up here, no matter which direction you come from. Unfortunately, the gate is still locked early in the morning, and you can't get in.
