This was one of the most important Cistercian centers in Italy. The church was built around 1135 according to the wishes of Saint Bernard of Claivaux and the Pallavicino family. The Romanesque church with 14th and 15th century frescoes and the beautiful cloister have been preserved from the abbey complex. The old facade of the basilica is still visible in the upper part, behind the 14th-century porch. The church consists of three naves with a transept according to the classical plan of the primitive churches of the Cistercian order. The southern part of the transept has a beautiful staircase, which gives access to the monks' dormitory.

12월 29, 2023, Castello di Castelnuovo Fogliani
The Castle, renovated in the eighteenth century with the elimination of the fortified structures, is a magnificent residential complex. The project is attributed to the architect Luigi Vanvitelli, the same as the Royal Palace of Caserta. We can see a large Italian garden, again of Vanvitellian style, with numerous tree species. The transformation from Castle to Palace was the work of the Marquises and Duke Giovanni Sforza Fogliani. A curiosity: in 1925 it was donated by Clelia Sforza Fogliani d'Aragona to the Holy See and Pope Pius The nuns lived in the castle and attended courses until 1973, the year from which they were then allowed to attend any type of university ;-)

11월 21, 2023, Rocca Sanvitale di Fontanellato
Planning the tour of the Castles of the Duchy of Parme and Piacenza we reached the "Fortress of Fontanellato". Rocca Sanvitale is an imposing fortress built in the 14th century on a pre-existing 12th century building. Subjected to numerous restorations, over the centuries it was transformed from a defensive fortress into the residence of the noble Sanvitale Counts who then inhabited it for around six centuries. It has a square plan with crenellated walls and four corner towers and is still surrounded by a large moat once fed by water produced by a spring and rearranged at the beginning of the 17th century by the Parma architect Smeraldo Smeraldi; the entrance to the internal courtyard is via a drawbridge. In 1948 the last Count handed over the Fortress with its furnishings to the Municipality, which subsequently transformed it into a museum.

The Rocca Sanvitale of Fontanellato stands enchantingly in the center of the village, surrounded by a wide moat filled with water: it contains one of the masterpieces of Italian mannerism, the small room painted by Parmigianino in 1524 with the myth of Diana and Actaeon. Inside the fortress, the Sanvitale noble apartment is still intact. In the Rocca Sanvitale of Fontanellato you can visit the only Optical Camera in operation in Italy within which a system of mirrors reflects the image of the square in front on a screen. Since March 2015, the rediscovered Banner of the Blessed Virgin of Fontanellato has been visible in a special wing of the Castle, the large red damask cloth 5 meters long and 4 meters high dated between 1654 and 1656. Its shape and the years of its execution have also made us think of its use as the flag of a ship - a Galera - captained by a noble Sanvitale, as some documents attest, which sailed the Mediterranean Sea during the war of Candia.

5월 6, 2022, Abbey of Chiaravalle della Colomba
The monastery of Chiaravalle, founded in 1136, represents one of the first Cistercian settlements in Italy. Originating from Clairvaux in Burgundy, it followed the Cistercian tradition with influences from Bernard of Clairvaux. The structure reflects typical Cistercian characteristics, with the presbytery at a straight end and square chapels on the sides. The monastic community actively contributed to the reclamation of the Po Valley, but in 1248 it was almost totally destroyed by the imperial troops.

Documents document the existence of the monastery from 1136, making it one of the early branches of the Cistercians in Italy. The first Cistercian monastery was founded in Cîteaux in Burgundy in 1098, and the famous Clairvaux (1115) a little later. Chiaravalle was founded directly by monks from Clairvaux, and there are some indications that Bernhard von Clairvaux was personally involved. The foundation of the Burgundian monastery can be seen in the name: Chiaravalle is the Italian development of the originally Latin name "claravallis" (= bright valley), Clairvaux the French. The suffix "della Colomba" (dove) refers to a legend in connection with the foundation: a white dove is said to have deposited a branch at the place where the monastery was to be founded. In the tradition of the Cistercians (ora et labora), the monastery has done remarkable things for the cultivation of the swamps and floodplain forests of the Po Valley. Extensive donations soon made the monastery so wealthy and powerful that it was able to found numerous other daughter monasteries in the area. Immediate daughter monasteries were Fontevivo, Quartazzola, Brondolo, Santa Maria in Strada and San Martino di Bocci. The abbey experienced its heyday in the Middle Ages. But in 1248 it was almost completely burned down by the troops of Emperor Friedrich II. The construction of the monastery adheres strictly to the guidelines that Bernhard had issued. Typical of Cistercian churches are the straight choir and the almost square chapels to the right and left of it. Originally there were two other chapels on the end of the transept. This arrangement, which also existed in Pontigny Abbey (Burgundy), clearly shows that many monks must have been priests at the same time, who needed chapels for their daily services.
