Great photo opportunity, but the area can be busy depending on the weather and it’s likely any progress on a bike would be very slow. Early mornings and evenings are good.

Climbing the Bwlch Mountain southwards from Treorchy (A4061) is a classic South Wales Valleys experience, offering a long, steady ascent. The road winds up from the Rhondda valley onto open moorland where the main challenge often becomes the significant exposure to wind. Enjoy the sweeping panoramic views from the top of this popular and rewarding climb.

Great cafe on the A48, with plenty of space to lock up your bike as you head in for coffee, etc.

Glyncorrwg Mountain Bike Cafe is worth a stop for good food or a cuppa if you ride up the Afan Valley.

The weir spans the River Taff, which flows directly through the heart of South Wales. It's a nice place to stop and refuel with picnic benches and a peaceful atmosphere.

Starting in the outskirts of Rhigos, this climb takes you past former mining areas and up to the top of Hirwaun Common. The climb passes the fomer Tower Colliery – which used to be the oldest working deep coal mine in the UK but closed in 2008. The climb gives both a feeling of industrial heritage but later the sweeping views of the Hirwaun Common. The first few km are fairly straight but near the summit, there are two switchback hairpins which add an alpine feel to this long-steady climb.

Harder than you think, but enjoyable.

Nice fast descent from the stone bridge at the bottom of the Blaen y Glyn climb along the west shore of the reservoir.

The pretty Radyr Weir spans over the River Taff and is currently working as a hydropower scheme, providing energy locally. You may find wild salmon and sea trout near the weir, as well as cormorants and grey herons.

Situated in the beautiful wilderness between the Breacon Beacons and the Black Mountain overlooked by the hills of Fan Fawr and Fan Gihirych, Maen Llia is a truly massive sliver of rock. While it is over 3.5 metres tall and nearly 3 metres wide, it is only 75 centimetres thick and bears a striking resemblance to a giant Neolithic hand axe. Although it is aligned north to south, the sides of the rock become surprisingly warm to the touch on a sunny day. This must have been an important pass between the hills, both to the local prehistoric population and to the Romans who came this way some 3000 years later - they built the road 'Sarn Helen' right by the stone and the current road still follows part of its course.

A stunning classic welsh castle in the heart of the town. Theres a road that loops all around the castle for a good 360 view. Can be quite busy at times being in the town centre

If you don't fancy the long gravel trail on the East shore, this is your tarmac option.

If you're not equipped for the gravel track on the East shore of Pontsticill Reservoir, the road on the West shore offers a fun tarmac alternative. A nice long straight to crank out some speed, or if it's the views you're after a nice viewpoint from the lay-by.

According to legend, the stone goes down to the river, the Afon Llia to drink on occasion. This tall tale seems likely to be an allusion to the fact that its shadow is cast across the moorland as far as the river when the sun is low in the evening sky.

Riding the Sarn Helen from the start at Ynysygerwn is a technical climb. I would say probably not ride-able on an analogue bike but completely possible by EMTB.

Viewpoint that you like to see on the ride from both sides. Climb or descent is nice and smooth.

the entrance or exit to the roman road that runs the length of wales, this makes a fantastic end to a trail or an exciting beginning.

Steadily ramps up towards the first hairpin - take the outside line if there's no oncoming traffic - ramps up to double digits after the first hairpin, with the gradient easing after the second. Generally a good road surface, albeit narrow in places - fortunately drivers are usually courteous and allow you to slowly grind your way up.
