The church of San Francesco and the convent of the same name stand in the square just outside the walls of Sarzana. According to tradition, it was Saint Francis himself who founded them upon his visit to the town. The first document attesting to the presence of a Franciscan community above the village dates back to 1238, but it was only towards the end of the 13th century that a larger convent and the current church were built. In the 15th century, the building was expanded with the addition of a dormitory and cloister. Today, the convent is deconsecrated and its premises house the offices of the Sarzana court. Church, convent and monastery of San Francesco, located just outside the walls of the historic center. The church, seat of the parish of the same name, stands in a large cemetery. The first documented mention of the religious building dates back to 1238, but according to tradition, St. Francis himself passed through Sarzana and founded the monastery. At the end of the thirteenth century, the monastery was still under construction, while in the fifteenth century it was extended with the dormitory and the cloister. The plant has the shape of a Latin cross and preserves numerous works of art of extreme historical and artistic importance for Sarzana and the Val di Magra.
