Spectacular cycle path...worth a ride!

🚴‍♂️ Strategic location! From Imperia Oneglia, you can easily take the cycle path, choosing whether to head east 🌅 toward Diano Marina, or west 🌄 toward Imperia Prino, heading towards Sanremo and the French border 🇫🇷. A perfect crossroads for two-wheeled adventures among the sea, villages, and spectacular views! 🌊🏞️

Getting up here is challenging....but very rewarding, for the view and for the satisfaction of having pedaled among the olive trees in perfect solitude, listening to the rhythm of your breathing, with your legs pushing. Priceless emotions!!

In Oneglia, one of the two urban centers that make up the municipality of Imperia, a pleasant cycle path allows you to avoid the traffic of the Aurelia and pedal in complete safety. The tunnel, not far from this point, is cool all year round.

Worthy of note here is the ancient Maro Castle, of which only four stones remain. In ancient times, along with the less ruined Prelà Castello, it guarded the Via del Sale. It is of enormous historical importance. The village is truly beautiful, and I recommend a bike tour. Also noteworthy are the Doria Palace and the beautiful church square.

Built by prisoners at the beginning of the century, as a fine, it is a beautiful church, but not particularly decorated. However, you can always see the inside. The location is panoramic, ruined by tall trees. It's worth ringing the bell in front for good luck, at full volume!

From here the view extends over the Prino valley to the sea. The sanctuary is a characteristic example of a neo-medieval building, finished in 1934, with historical memory value for the fallen of the First World War and for the prisoners who lent their work there, supported by their chaplain don Abbo, who died in concept of holiness. It is auspicious to ring the bell placed on the church square

The Prela valley extends towards the sea up to Moltedo, a town surrounded by olive trees close to Porto Maurizio, formerly called Morteo, i.e. a place full of myrtles, from "myrtetum". In the Middle Ages the cultivation of myrtle was very extensive, because the plant was used to decorate churches and to tan leather; tanning was a well-documented activity in the Val Prino (first half of the 17th century) with numerous "fides" in the deeds of Dolcedesi notaries. Moltedo and divided into two districts, the lower one once belonged to the Genoese and the upper one was part of the Savoy jurisdiction. A small stream divided the two villages and the Savoyard state from the Genoese one at the same time. Therefore, the inhabitants of the same parish were subjects of different states. As a border village, smugglers and brigands found refuge there, for reasons of traffic or by invoking the right of asylum. Tradition has it that, among these, the famous Flemish painter Antonio VanDyck (1599-1641) took refuge in Moltedo. In 1624, perhaps in the church of S. Anna, he would have painted the famous picture of the Holy Family, using the rough canvas used by the peasants for the olive harvest, after having been the protagonist of a romantic adventure with a young Genoese patrician, Paolina Adorno , his model for a painting of the Madonna and next wife of Count Antonio Giulio Brignole. A tender love had blossomed between the two with a sensational epilogue when on the very day of their wedding with Brignole, the enterprising artist with a mask on her face kidnapped the noblewoman and with her took refuge in Moltedo in Savoyard territory.
