We tried to walk around Corno Piccolo, but that is not possible without gear. Halfway we had te go back and then walked up to the Refugio. Very nice view and very nice walk.

The view from up here is amazing!

The Madonnina is the point of reference for those who frequent the Gran Sasso. The cable car that goes up from Prati di Tivo arrives here. It is the starting point of the path that leads to the Franchetti refuge and the various summit paths. The path that goes up to the Madonnina from Prati di Tivo is however a beautiful excursion suitable for anyone.

The construction of this structure began in the period between 1930 and 1935. However, the ruined Arapietra hotel was never completed due to the arrival of the war and, to this day, remains incomplete and abandoned. This building is located on the Arapietra crest, in the heart of the Gran Sasso park on the eastern slope of the mountain of the same name, at approximately 1,900 meters above sea level, and is constantly exposed to the sun. From the refuge it is possible to enjoy a truly breathtaking panorama, which extends from the Vomano valley to the Adriatic sea, passing through the two peaks of the Corni (Corno Grande and Corno Piccolo), Mount Prena, Mount Brancastello, Intermesoli, the Laga mountains and Mount Camicia. From here you can access excursions to reach the peaks of all these mountains. Aside from the constant gradient and some rocky sections, these trails are easy to navigate while running.

From here, at 2,050 meters above sea level, you can enjoy an extraordinary view of the summit of Gran Sasso, the Corno Grande. There is also the upper station of the cable car that connects Prati di Tivo, at 1,449 meters above sea level, to this station, called La Madonnina. The name derives from a small cave with a statue of the Madonna, also called “Bianca Castellana”. The statue, created by the Roman artist Conti, was brought here in 1935.

Modest refuge located in the municipality of Isola del Gran Sasso, on the northern side of the massif. It is positioned along the path that connects Forca di Valle and the Ara Pietra.
