The Taverna del Cortile is one of the most significant sites in the Molise sheep-track network. Located in the countryside north of Campobasso, it has been a key stop for transhumance for centuries, offering shelter and refreshment to shepherds and their flocks traveling between the Abruzzo highlands and the pastures of Puglia. Built in the 17th century, the tavern was a strategic stopping point, a crossroads between the rural and urban worlds. Here, people ate, prayed, exchanged news, and found solace. Its location at the gates of the city made it a place of transition between pastoral and urban culture. Its importance is linked to the convergence of two sheep tracks: - the Cortile–Centocelle track, which connected the Celano–Foggia sheep track - the Cortile–Matese track, which connected the Castel di Sangro–Lucera sheep track with the Pescasseroli–Candela, passing through Bojano and Sepino This double connection made the Taverna del Cortile a vital hub for transhumance, where flocks, merchants, pilgrims, and travelers met. It was a hub between the major grassy arteries that crisscrossed Molise, and contributed to the economic and cultural development of the area. Today, although no longer active, the tavern retains a strong identity. It is mentioned in cultural walks, hikes, and gravel rides that celebrate the memory of transhumance. Campodipietra is a convenient point of passage to catch your breath and hydrate at the public fountains as well as in the central activities of the town. Its position is strategic because it is at the center of many possible tours both in terms of distance and difficulty, all surrounded by greenery. In addition to being a village bordering the capital and being very close to the state road to Foggia, from Campodipietra it is possible to move easily on pleasant provincial roads towards hilly towns such as Jelsi and Gildone, from which it is possible to move towards higher altitudes and historical/cultural centers such as Riccia and Cercemaggiore. Furthermore, it is possible to discover characteristic villages such as Toro and San Giovanni in Galdo from which it is possible to easily reach other important centers such as Matrice and Campolieto via provincial roads that offer truly relaxing hilly views because they have little traffic.

Let me start by saying that I did a complete tour of the lake starting from the crossroads on the state road to Tufara and then going back up towards Celenza Valfortore. As far as I'm concerned, I preferred the Apulian side to the Molise side, both for the panorama and for the "quality" of the road. I suggest turning around at the barrier (Puglia side) since at a certain point there is no practicable route. We took absurd gambles in the middle of bushes full of thorns. Furthermore, according to the operators of the barrier, you have to call the consortium and get a permit to be able to cross.

The Bosco Casale Regional Nature Reserve is located in the municipality of Casacalenda, Molise.
