The reservoir provides flood protection for the surrounding communities, especially the town of Tirschenreuth. During periods of low rainfall, water stored in the lake is released. In addition, renewable energy is generated through hydropower using a Francis turbine. Energy production is managed by Bayerische Landeskraftwerke GmbH. The spiral turbine is fed with lake water via a 110-meter-long bottom outlet tunnel. The generator's average annual output is approximately 0.57 million kilowatt-hours.

Hikers and cyclists can park for free in the large parking lot directly by the reservoir.

The old stone bridge spans the Geißbach stream. It now has a metal railing, which detracts from the bridge's beauty.

The Liebenstein reservoir in the municipality of Plößberg covers an area of 40 hectares and has a normal water level of seven meters. Due to its scenic location, the Liebenstein reservoir has become a popular local recreation area. The area around the reservoir is ideal for boating, fishing, cycling, and hiking.

The loop trail leads around the flood control reservoir, completed in 1968, and offers beautiful views of the water. In the eastern part, the Waldnaab river's tributary area, nature is particularly pristine.
