The refuge is located in the heart of the Écrins park, slightly overlooking the Muzelle lake. It has a capacity of 70 beds and offers a catering service. Lake Eychauda is a natural lake of glacial origin. It is one of the largest lakes in the Écrins massif. It is also located in the heart of the Écrins National Park and thus constitutes a refuge of choice for biodiversity. Its milky appearance, fed by meltwater from the Séguret Foran glacier, makes it easily identifiable.

Lac de l'Eychauda is a glacial lake of the Séguret Foran and has turquoise blue water. There is ice here until well into the summer.

Above the mountain village of Dormillouse is the mountain lake Lac Paluel. Further on is another lake: Lac Faravel.

It is a communally owned hut that offers a little more comfort than typical Alpine Club huts. Even showering is possible. The innkeepers prepare delicious meals and are quite personable.
