The beautiful Schmalkalden train station, with its half-timbered facade, is a real eye-catcher. It is the main station in the Thuringian town of Schmalkalden. Other stations include Auehütte, Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences, Mittelschmalkalden, Niederschmalkalden, and Wernshausen.

Yes, unfortunately, the beer garden was no longer open in 2024. A gem along the bike path that is sorely missed.

The beer garden seems to have been closed for a while. Too bad, I had to leave without stopping.

Parking is free on site.

The station is open. You can warm up a little in the winter and have a snack if you want. There are enough places to sit. It is good that you don't need any change for the open toilets. It is a good place to wait for the train.

If you come down from Beerberg and want to continue on to Oberhof, you should definitely join the cycle path to Oberhof west of the car park. It is best to turn left at the car park and go against the one-way street 😊 to the cycle path at the upper and western end of the car park. Unfortunately, there is no green arrow or other indication of the beautiful, car-free, tarred cycle path from the roundabout into Oberhof.

The best view of the Rennsteig ski jump is from the road or from the viewing point directly below. It is definitely worth making the climb from the valley of the Haselbach.
