Great Via Verde with many highlights

This green path runs along the old railway line that linked Astillero and Ontaneda with the Cantabrian coast. In total, it is a journey of about 34 km between green grasslands, deciduous forests and small livestock farms.

If you are going to visit the area, the ornithological center is the first obligatory stop. It can guide you about the most interesting things around the reservoir. They tell you about the birds that populate the Ebro Reservoir and where you can observe them (more than 70 species of waterfowl). They offer you two different routes. Each itinerary will be interpreted by the Center's specialized guide service.

The set of the Cuevas del Monte Castillo in Puente Viesgo is undoubtedly one of the greatest exponents of Rock Art in Spain. It is a set of four cavities with Paleolithic rock art, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2008. Of the four, two are open to the public: El Castillo and Las Monedas. It is located right next to the greenway. It was built in 1885 in order to supply drinking water to the city of Santander. It is surrounded by nature and there are chairs, tables and benches in the park.
