Bealach na Bà from Applecross is a legendary Highland climb, averaging 7% over 9 km with brutal ramps up to 20%. The single-track road winds through jaw-dropping mountain scenery, with hairpin bends, steep gradients, and exposure to wild weather. The tarmac is generally good, but the climb demands pacing—start steady and save energy for the relentless final switchbacks. Stay alert for oncoming vehicles and give yourself space on tight corners. Reach the summit, and you're rewarded with one of the most dramatic views—and descents—in all of the UK.

Beautiful expansive sandy beach situated on Loch Gairloch

Sea loch in the very north west tip of Ross and Cromarty. Plenty of wildlife to spot and fishing trawlers coming in and out with their days catch.

Beautifu and unspoilt beach - typical of this area. White sand and blue water, you'd never think you're in Scotland! Great place to stop for a paddle or a swim.

Nice view down to Gairloch beach. It's easy to get down to the sand if you wish, or you can just enjoy the view from above.

Truly amazing sunsets from this beach. It's beautiful at anytime of the day but it's well worth trying to time your ride to pass by here around sunset. Be warned after the beach heading back inland the tarmac runs out and the road becomes gravel for about 10km. It's ridable on a road bike if you like that sort of thing.

Applecross is the ideal starting point for taking on Bealech na ba, one of the top 100 climbs in the UK. Plenty of cafes to refuel if you're about to take on the climb. It's a pretty fishing village in it's own right but it's dominated by the famous climb.

There are benches by the Loch where you can stop, make a brew and enjoy the views! Just watch out for midges !!!!

Starting from near sea-level it rises 626m in 9.1km of uphill – reaching 20% at its steepest gradient. If you wanted to do an ‘everesting’ challenge, it would only take 14.1 times to climb the 8,848m. One of the most beautiful climbs in Britain – if not one of the hardest.

Gairloch beach lovely dip.

Despite the climb only being 600m Bealach na Ba has real alpine feel to it. It is quite spectacular. Best ridden East to west, then topped of with a drink at the Applecross Inn at the bottom of the beautiful and fun descent.

The Bealach is pretty fearsome from either approach, but climbing from Tornapress probably gives the best descent. The climb itself starts pretty steady with spectacular views of the eastern cliffs of the mountain you are about to cycle over. On turning east and heading into Coire na Ba, things pick up a little and it doesn't really relent at all till near the top, where switchbacks drop the gradient to something a bit more manageable. The steepest sustained section is just prior to the switchbacks, where the gradient averages maybe 14-15%. It is a grind unless you are one of those sprightly road cyclists, and the entire climb itself should not be underestimated. With the switchbacks completed it is a short run to the top of the route, with spectacular views over to Skye. The best views down the Bealach itself are slightly before the summit, captured in a separate highlight. It's also worth noting that there are other road users, and although there plenty of passing places, you may have someone on your tail for a while - from my experience, motorists are sympathetic to those struggling to get up there. Having got to the top, the descent to Applecross itself is fantastic, but care is required due to a few very sharp bends. From Applecross, the masochistic can return the way they came, or the slightly less masochistic can head north around the coastal road to Shieldaig. It is pretty lumpy, particularly when getting towards Shieldaig, but nothing anywhere near as steep or sustained as the Bealach.
