Small Islands 'De Petten' consists of brackish waters and artificially protected islands. The water in this nature area is brackish because the salt water adjoining 'De Petten' mixes with the fresh rainwater. Every four years, mussels are strewn on the small islands to prevent them from crumbling in the water. Annually in winter the grown plants are removed from the ground. This makes the dry parts of 'De Petten' an ideal and sought-after breeding ground for the different bird species. But birds that are just passing through like to land at De Petten to take a break. The nature area also serves as a haven for birds when the sea level is very high. fishing 'De Petten' is separated from the nature areas 'De Mok' and 'De Mokbaai' by a sea dike, where birds can fish to their heart's content for their offspring. The approach and departure of the birds over the dyke is a special sight. Many shelducks, ringed plovers, greylag geese, black-headed gulls, avocets, terns and common terns are observed in this area during the breeding season. 'De Petten' is not accessible to visitors, but can be seen from the public path or from the dyke - with or without binoculars. 'Natural Monuments' 'De Petten' is managed by 'Natuurmonumenten'. This association is a landscape conservation organization. That is, it protects nature by taking care of areas. 'Natuurmonumenten' also preserves the natural treasures and thereby awakens more interest in nature in society.

The dune area Bollekamer is located between the Hoornderslag and the Jan Ayeslag, in the southwest of Texel. The wide valleys are covered with dune heather and you can see special plants such as the blue-belled gentian, which cannot be missed in summer due to its deep blue color. Along the way you may encounter Scottish highlanders and Exmoor ponies grazing the dunes.

‚De Bollekamer‘ ist eines der ältesten Dünentäler der Insel. Ende des 16. Jahrunderts lag dieses Naturgebiet noch am Meer und war durch Fischer und Bauern bewohnt. Im Laufe der Zeit verschob sich die Küstenlinie westwärts. Unter anderem wurde das Gebiet nasser, durch den Anstieg des Grundwassers und das Eindämmen von ‚de Moksloot‘. Der östliche Teil von ‚De Bollekamer‘ hat den höchsten Grundwasserspiegel des Dünengebietes. Weil ‚De Bollekamer‘ nass und sauer ist, gedeihen Torfmoose hier gut. Die Torfmoose scheiden Säure aus, wovon andere Pflanzen profitieren.‚De Bollekamer‘ wird seit 1994 durch Schottische Hochlandrinder und Exmoor Pony’s begrast. Diese Tiere bleiben das ganze Jahr draußen und haben kaum Versorgung nötig. Die Tiere, die eigentlich alles mögen sorgen dafür, dass schnellwachsende Pflanzen und Sträucher sowie die übrige Begrünung nicht überwuchern. Die Tiere helfen der Staatlichen Forstverwaltung, die das Gebiet verwaltet, auf diese Weise die Landschaft ‚offen‘ zu halten. Aber die Staatliche Forstverwaltung macht noch mehr, um so vielen Pflanzen wie möglich Raum zu geben. So werden Teile der Heide regelmäßig abgetragen und gemäht. Auf diesen Flächen wachsen unter anderem auch Sonnentau und Glockenenzian. Auch gedeiht auf Texel das seltene Waldläusekraut prima. Weil der Boden sauer ist, kommen ebenfalls Pflanzen wie Erica, schmalblättriges Wollgras und Tandjesplas vor. Über die Heide fliegen viele prächtige Schmetterlinge, wie der Geißklee-Bläuling und die Äsche. Durch ‚De Bollekamer‘ läuft eine schöne Wanderroute. Wer in den Dünen wandern geht, muss berücksichtigen, den Jungtieren der Schottischen Hochlandrinder nicht zu nahe zu kommen. Die kerngesunden Alttiere lieben es nicht, wenn Fremde zu nah herankommen. Auch vom Streicheln und Füttern wird abgeraten. Wenn es friert, ist ‚het Grote Vlak‘, der See in ‚De Bollekamer‘, der durch das angrenzende Naturgebiet ‚De Geul‘ läuft, unter den Texelern ein beliebter Platz. Es wird dann, vornehmlich durch die ‚Hoornders‘, nach herzenslust auf dem Eis, was sich auf dem Wasser zwischen den Dünen bildet, Schlittschuhgelaufen. Um die Flora und Fauna nicht zu zerstören, gelten im ‚Nationaal Park Duinen van Texel‘, wovon ‚De Bollekamer‘ ein Teil ist, einige Regeln. So darf man sich nicht außerhalb der angegebenen Wanderwege begeben, müssen Fahrradfahrer auf dem Fahrradweg bleiben und müssen Hunde das ganze Jahr über angeleint bleiben. https://texelinformatie.nl/de/texel-de/natur/de-bollekamer/

The nature reserve near Den Horn is really worth a hike! Great scenery, a bunker, breeding flocks of birds and wild horses and cattle can be enjoyed here. There are several hiking trails that are well signposted.

simply beautifully situated between lake and ponds. With many birds to watch. No wide paths, but "one-lane" trails. We were excited.
