Sigmundskron Castle is located south of Bolzano, above the Adige River. The castle has changed hands and names several times over the centuries. Before Sigmundskron, the castle was called Firmian. The current owner, Reinhold Messner, also calls the castle ruins that, more precisely MMM Firmian (Messner Mountain Museum). The MMM is a project with six locations in Tyrol.

Great section of the route, a lovely tour along the Eisack river. Beautiful scenery. A relaxed tour on well-developed paths. First-class and exemplary cycle paths around Bolzano, which run through a beautiful river landscape. It's really cool to cycle so close between two rivers. It's quite rare, so it's especially worth planning this section of the route into your tour. It's a must-see.

For those who normally only cycle over bridges, the tunnel ride is a real highlight. It's great that these routes have been prepared for cyclists. This tunnel was developed as part of the conversion of an old railway line into a cycle path. The route is one of the most popular cycle paths in the region, as it offers a picturesque and safe connection through the Überetsch area.

Sigmundskron Castle sits enthroned on a rock at a strategically important location. It is a symbolic landmark for the South Tyroleans. On November 17, 1957, approximately 35,000 South Tyroleans from all valleys and regions gathered at Sigmundskron Castle. They protested for more rights. The castle has become a symbol of South Tyrol's autonomy. Reinhold Messner, who was born in Brixen in 1944, therefore shows a strong connection to this castle in his homeland.

Small lake, idyllically situated in the middle of the forest. Steep approach through the forest on gravel, also doable with a trekking bike. Possibility to stop for refreshments at the lake, perfect!

The journey through is a real highlight, because it is a great thing that these routes have been prepared for cyclists. Via Verde could be done more often elsewhere and would also be desirable!
