The Münzbach rises here at an altitude of 535 m above sea level. It flows in a northeasterly direction and feeds the Erzengler Pond at an altitude of 495 m above sea level.

The university town[2] Freiberg is a large district town and mountain town roughly in the middle of the Free State of Saxony between Dresden and Chemnitz. The middle town is the administrative seat of the Central Saxony district, which was formed in 2008, and, with the Freiberg Mining Academy, founded in 1765, is the seat of the oldest still existing technical and mining science university in the world. The entire historic city center is under monument protection. Together with local monuments of mining history such as the Reichen Zeche, it has been part of the Erzgebirge mining region UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019.[3] Until 1969, the city was characterized by the mining and metallurgical industry for around 800 years. In the last few decades, there has been a structural change to become a high-tech location in the areas of semiconductor production and solar technology, making Freiberg part of Silicon Saxony.
