Long before Lake Banter existed, a church stood here in the Middle Ages. It was located in front of the dike line and was therefore built on a mound. On January 16, 1511, a storm and ice drift from the devastating St. Anthony's Flood destroyed the church. It was not rebuilt. The debris was used elsewhere. The granite blocks were used for an extension to the Neuender Church, and the timber was used for the construction of the Maadesiel. Wilhelmshaven is not a beautiful city. It was only shoddily rebuilt after the severe wounds of the war. Nevertheless, there are some beautiful areas in Wilhelmshaven that are worth seeing, among others. The Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge, the town hall, and the Banter Ruins are particularly noteworthy. Along with the south beach and harbor facilities, and several museums, Wilhelmshaven is definitely worth a visit. You have to close your eyes a bit to the often unsuccessful architecture of the newer buildings. For example, the negative buildings on the town hall square. Well, I still like being in Wilhelmshaven because it's my hometown.
