Tankumsee is an artificial lake in Isenbüttel, in the district of Gifhorn. It was created around 1970 as a gravel pit during the construction of the Elbe Lateral Canal and was opened as a bathing lake in 1976. Since then, a recreational area with holiday homes and leisure activities has developed around the lake. (Wikipedia)

A beautiful lake with sandy beaches. You can comfortably walk around it in just under an hour on good paths.

Here, you can easily cross under the canal to reach the other side. Signposts will guide you.

The Tankumsee lake was created by excavation during the construction of the Elbe Lateral Canal. This hideous underpass isn't a highlight for me personally, but if you like it... it certainly blows so many people away that the smelly little tunnel, complete with its accompanying signpost, has been named a highlight of a bike tour three times (!) 😁

Here you pass under the Elbe Lateral Canal and enter the Barnbruch nature reserve.

A very beautiful, wide beach on the lake that invites you to stay.
