The Mouse Tower in Lake Hengstey is a relic from the time before the lake was created. Originally, it was part of a pedestrian suspension bridge that spanned the Ruhr River and connected Villa Niedernhofen to the opposite bank. This bridge led to the so-called Funkenburg, a villa built around 1900. The Mouse Tower served as the bridgehead and also housed the coachman of the family who lived there. With the damming of the Ruhr to create Lake Hengstey in 1929, the bridge lost its function, and the tower remained as an isolated structure on a small island in the lake. Today, the Mouse Tower is a striking landmark of the lake and a popular subject for photographs. It is located near the Seeschlösschen (Lake Castle) on the northern shore of Lake Hengstey and serves as a reminder of the old connection across the Ruhr before it became a reservoir. While the tower is not accessible, it is easily visible from the shore and from a boat on the lake.

On an island in the lake opposite the Seeschlösschen on the north shore, also known as the Funkenburg, stands the Mouse Tower, which was the bridgehead of a pedestrian suspension bridge over the Ruhr before the reservoir was built.

The tower is the remainder of a pedestrian suspension bridge from the Villa Niedernhof on the north bank of Herdeck to the former south bank of the Ruhr with the former knight's residence Haus Niedernhofen in Hengstey. Since the damming of the river to Hengsteysee, the building no longer stands on the shore but is surrounded on all sides by water. The small island with the tower serves as a breeding ground and quarters for birds and bats.
