The Merchants' Church (St. Gregory) is one of Erfurt's most historically significant churches. It stands prominently at the northern end of the Anger square and is particularly known for its close connection to the family of Johann Sebastian Bach and to Martin Luther. Founded by merchants as early as the 11th century (hence the name), it is one of the city's oldest parish churches. Luther Site: On October 22, 1522, Martin Luther preached here during his journey from the Diet of Worms. A monument in front of the church commemorates this event. The Merchants' Church is considered the home church of the Bach family of musicians in Erfurt. The church records contain over 100 entries (baptisms, weddings, burials). Of particular importance: Johann Sebastian Bach's parents were married here in 1668.
