Opened in 1888, the approximately 24 km long route connected Mügeln via Wermsdorf and Mutzschen with Neichen. It was mainly used for freight transport in the agricultural hilly country, mainly for the sugar beet harvest. Excursion traffic to Horstsee was also of some importance. Between 1967 and 1972, most of the route was gradually closed down; the section from Mügeln to Glossen is still in operation today.
