Enchanting artificial lake at the foot of Rocciamelone

Dam lake very well known and frequented by many people in the summer period, but parking for motor vehicles is subject to a fee (rate July and August 2024: €5 on weekdays and €7 on weekends)

Lake Malciaussia is an artificial basin located at 1,805 meters above sea level. The dam dates back to the 1930s; the barrier allows to collect the water useful for the creation of electricity.

Every Thursday from the end of June to the beginning of August the road is reserved for cyclists only, closed to motorized vehicles from 11.30 to 15.30.

Beautiful mountain road, suitable for Mountinbiker as well as for road bikes. At 14 km a rise of 380 m to cope. Slope on two sections up to 12%

The name Malciaussia is probably derived from the French "times ciaussia" which means as much as badly fogged. It can be assumed that it meant "badly studded shoes" used by local mountaineers. The lake was built in the 20s and 30s as a reservoir for power generation. The town of Malciaussia was flooded. The continuous asphalt road from Usseglio to the reservoir is certainly a highlight for ambitious cyclists.
