The Kürschnergrube in the Leithagebirge is an old, abandoned quarry with a cave. The furrier pit is approx. 120 m long, 40 m wide and 6 m deep. The cave in the Kürschnergrube is approx. 23 m long, 11 m deep and is supported by a pillar. The origin of the name "Kürschnergrube" is not clear. It is said to be derived from the furriers who heated the fine sand and used it to degrease the hairy side of the furs.

According to legend, the name comes from a robber captain named Kürschnersepp, who often hid in the furrier's pit and made the Leithagebirge unsafe. When the military finally encircled him, a carter allegedly helped him escape by hiding him in a wooden box covered with sand.

The hollow was created here through the targeted breakdown of porous Leithakalk (friction sand). During the Russian occupation in World War II, part of the local population (women and children) hid in the Teufelsloch for 14 days.
