Built in 1873–1874 according to plans by the Eger architect Vinzenz Prökl and designed by Karl Haberzettel in the Neo-Renaissance style. The building site was part of the old city fortifications in the west of the old town, the Jungfernschanze, which was transformed into a grand theater square. Construction of St. Nicholas Church likely began between 1220 and 1230. Only the west portal, parts of the north portal, and the lower sections of the east towers remain from the former basilica. The floor plan resembles that of Bamberg Cathedral, which probably served as a model. The three-aisled nave, the presbytery, and the sacristy date from the Gothic period. After a fire in 1742, the towers were rebuilt with Baroque domes based on a design by Balthasar Neumann, who was born here. In April, the roof was destroyed by a bombing raid. The house, with its richly articulated and ornamented Rococo facade, is one of the most valuable results of the late Baroque renovations of the 18th century. Originally a late Gothic house, it was purchased by the Jesuits in 1657 with the intention of demolishing it along with the neighboring houses and replacing it with a convent building. Construction never took place, and the Madonna relief with a chronogram (1662) above the portal survives from this period. Professor Marian Karel proposed the installation of the Time Gate during the reconstruction and renovation of Cheb's pedestrian zone in 2009 and 2010. His artwork became part of the redevelopment concept. The monumental Time Gate represents a door leading into a now-demolished house that once stood on this site, where the medieval city of Cheb opened its gateway to the industrial age and the future. The artifact rotates imperceptibly on its own axis, completing a 180-degree turn every 24 hours. At midnight, it is in the "Closed" position. At noon, it is in the "Open" position. The sides of the artifact then connect with a timeline of key dates in Cheb's history. This timeline runs through the entire pedestrian zone, culminating in 2011, the year the city celebrated its 950th anniversary. The Time Gate is nine meters high, two meters wide, and weighs 3.5 tons.

The medieval practice of constructing relatively tall buildings in close proximity in city centers also led to the development of the Stöckl complex in Cheb. Today, it comprises eleven buildings, some separated by a narrow alleyway. Its origins date back to the 13th century. The oldest depiction of the city, from 1472, shows additional buildings that were later demolished. The Stöckl is a symbol of the city and is featured in its logo.
