Construction of St. Nicholas Church likely began between 1220 and 1230. Only the west portal, parts of the north portal, and the lower sections of the east towers remain from the former basilica. The floor plan resembles that of Bamberg Cathedral, which probably served as a model. The three-aisled nave, the presbytery, and the sacristy date from the Gothic period. After a fire in 1742, the towers were rebuilt with Baroque domes based on a design by Balthasar Neumann, who was born here. In April, the roof was destroyed by a bombing raid. Bad Neualbenreuth lies at the foot of the Tillenberg hill, which is steeped in legend. The Tillenberg, the natural border with the Czech Republic, has become a connecting link between the two countries, as clearly depicted in the fountain.

On the road to the Grenzlandturm (Border Tower), in a scenic location, stands the small "Schoenstatt Chapel." The chapel was built by families on the site where, in 1968, Schoenstatt priest Chaplain Georg Frank had erected a wayside shrine in honor of the Thrice Admirable Mother, Queen and Victress of Schoenstatt. Schoenstatt is a Marian pilgrimage site near Koblenz on the Rhine. Here, on October 18, 1914, Father Josef Kentenich founded the Schoenstatt Movement, a Marian-apostolic educational movement within the Church that sees itself as being particularly called to implement the results of the Second Vatican Council into practical reality. Here on the border, families feel committed to the heritage and legacy of their father and founder, Father Kentenich. The charming chapel is open to all who wish to invoke the Mother of the Lord with the concerns of the Church and personal petitions. The "Schoenstatt Chapel" received the ecclesiastical blessing on 1 May 1978
