There are two market fountains from the 15th century on the market square. Only later were they made of stone and decorated with decorative sculptures. The first stone fountain in Eger, built on the upper market square by master Erhard Pauer from Eichstätt in the years 1481-1482, was removed when the Bahnhofstrasse breached in 1865. In 1523 the wooden tubular box in the middle of the market square was set in stone and in 1528 it was decorated with a colored wooden figure by a painter named Mathes. Since it was set up on the day of Saint Martin and was similar to the Eger carpenter Barth, it was immediately nicknamed the Martl Barth carpenter. In 1591 it was replaced by a stone soldier figure by the sculptor Wolf Henff. This Roland figure, a symbol of city rights, was soon given the popular name "Wastl". In 1966 the Roland figure was renovated by the sculptor Jozka Antek and replaced in 1981 by a copy by the sculptor J. Zivny. The original was given to the museum.
