Stadthagen is a planned settlement founded in 1225 as indago comitis adolphi (Hagen of Count Adolf). For this purpose, he had the forest cleared and a castle built. Stadthagen also received a city wall around 1400, parts of which still survive from this period. Today, Stadthagen still boasts a beautiful old town, where the planned construction is still clearly visible. The entire fortifications can also be explored in a beautiful park, allowing you to walk around the entire town.

The size of this castle surprised me. Viewing only with a completed tax return and correct tax number 😉

At the Viehmarkt, a square that was still between the city wall and the ramparts in the late Middle Ages, there is a watchtower from the former city fortifications. It was built in 1423. In Stadthagen, however, the entire course of the city wall can still be seen. This was built after the invention of firearms to protect the city from being attacked by them. The former wall is now a green area with a walking path that can be used to walk around the entire city center. Source: https://www.quermania.de/niedersachsen-bremen/stadthagen/turm-viehmarkt.php

Stadthagen Castle, belonging to the then-ruling counts and later princely house of Schaumburg-Lippe, was built between 1535 and 1539 by Count Adolf XI in Stadthagen on the site of a predecessor structure. This was a moated castle built in 1224 by Count Adolf III of Schaumburg in a clearing in the Dülwald forest. First documented in 1244, the castle must have been part of the town's founding from the very beginning, as its two streets were aligned with it. Extensive construction work is documented for the period around 1300. In 1304, a "house" is mentioned in the castle. In 1406, three castle guards are mentioned. The 15th-century gatehouse was later incorporated into the west wing of the castle. The new castle building, beginning in 1535, was planned and built by master builder Jörg Unkair, who came from Lustnau near Tübingen and had previously worked at the Cistercian monastery of Bebenhausen. He himself selected Obernkirchen sandstone from the Bückeberg near Obernkirchen. The residential palace was designed as a spacious, square, four-winged complex, with its northwest corner open to the town. The dormer windows and wing gables – Italian gables – resemble those of the Schelenburg near Osnabrück, which Unkair had previously built. However, since in Stadthagen, unlike at Schelenburg, he did not have to consider the medieval castle remains, the palace appears welcoming both internally and externally. It was built purely as a residential palace, without any military functions. After its completion in 1539, the Schaumburg state government moved in the following year; the tax and finance authorities also had their headquarters here. In 1608, the government and residence of the Schaumburg counts were relocated to Bückeburg. Later, the palace served as a widow's residence and the residence of the Crown Prince. A comprehensive restoration took place in 1875. After the First World War, the castle became the property of the newly founded Free State of Schaumburg-Lippe in 1919, and of the state of Lower Saxony since 1946. The castle is considered the oldest and most influential Weser Renaissance monument in Lower Saxony. Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schloss_Stadthagen

The Amtspforte is a landmark of Stadthagen and a successful example of the approximately 500-year-old wooden architecture. Originally built as an office building and used as a residential building from 1900, the building has housed the city museum for around 50 years. It shows urban and regional history on three levels. The interplay of historical architecture and contemporary museum design is characteristic here. The museum is located in the immediate vicinity of one of the largest and oldest Weser Renaissance castles and the castle park on the one hand and the beginning of the pedestrian zone on the other. The Gothic St. Martini Church in Stadthagen was built in 1230, but was replaced by a larger building in 1318. Its striking 42.3 meter high tower still shapes the cityscape today. Various building elements added in the Middle Ages and early modern times give the church its current form. A special feature is the organ, which was first mentioned in a document in 1559 and has been preserved to this day through extensive restoration work.

The prince's mausoleum at the St. Martini church in Stadthagen in the district of Schaumburg is a synthesis of the arts of architecture, sculpture and painting, which is of international importance. Stadthagen has been the residence of the Counts of Schauenburg and Holstein since the 13th century. Several members of the Schaumburg family were already buried in the Franciscan church there, and later in the parish church of St. Martin. Although Ernst moved his residence to Bückeburg in 1607, he chose the site to the east of the choir apex of the Martini Church for his mausoleum. The first plans were drawn up in the same year, 1607. After Ernst had obtained the title of imperial prince from Emperor Ferdinand II in 1619, the mausoleum was also intended to reflect this rank. The construction work began in 1620 and was completed after his death in 1622 by his widow. Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/F%C3%BCrstliches_Mausoleum_(Stadthagen)

Florian Redeker is responsible for historical information signs of this type at the tourist office. He learned about the subject from the city archivist Adolf Tatje. A piece of city history that is horrifying from today's perspective has opened up there. Redeker found it particularly interesting how archivist Tatje is able to read between the lines. For example, the barrels of wine or beer that the executioner received in thalers in addition to his pay reveal that his job as an executioner fermented the desire to forget, Redeker knows. How many thalers the commissioner received for hanging depended, for example, on how often he had to torture a delinquent until he made a confession without recantation, explains archivist Tatje. "If he was revoked, he had to put his limbs back in order to be able to continue torturing later," says Tatje - all work steps that the city had to pay for. There was no torture flat rate. Tatje was particularly touched by a story from the 17th century. At that time, a woman from Wiedensahl is said to have thrown her child into a well. The well was drained to access the newborn's body. The accused confessed after the first stage of torture - showing and explaining the instruments. She was hung up in front of the Niederntor.
