At the beginning, the Frankonia fountain was still called the Luitpold fountain or Prince Regent Luitpold fountain, as it was intended to honor the prince regent of the same name. However, it is now known as the Frankonia fountain, which, like the Residenz Palace and the Residenzplatz, is part of the Würzburg Residenz and is therefore also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Frankonia fountain was originally intended not only to beautify the city of Würzburg, but also to commemorate the Franconian people and their heroes. Star Fountain at Sternplatz The fountain at Sternplatz is a figurative fountain erected in 1987. It was created as part of the redesign of Sternplatz. The flat base is star-shaped. The central circular basin sculpture made of pink marble suggests the forms of water lilies. The surrounding points of the star are paved. Several bronze figures designed by Lothar Forster rise above the base: a nymph, a faun, and a group of tritons. To the side, on a stone block, stands a small water dispenser with a fish figure. In Lower Franconia, the building is a highlight of the late Gothic era. Despite the size of the building, as the name suggests, the "Marienkapelle" is only a chapel and not a church, as it was not granted parish rights. This was because the chapel was built against the wishes of the Prince-Bishop. Special features of the architecture The Marienkapelle in Würzburg has three portals with tympanums. Each tympanum (or decorative surface) depicts a different scene. The south portal is best known for the sandstone figures of Adam and Eve. However, these are only copies of the actual figures by Tilman Riemenschneider. The original figures can be viewed in the Mainfränkisches Museum. The west portal also features a decorative panel depicting the Last Judgment.
