Kollegienkirche (University Church), Salzburg A market takes place on Universitätsplatz from Monday to Friday. The square becomes a beautiful backdrop for locally produced products – impressively framed by the Kollegienkirche (also called the University Church). It was built according to plans by the famous architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and can be considered a masterpiece of the Baroque superstar architect. The Kollegienkirche is dedicated to "Our Lady." Adjacent to the Kollegienkirche is the Old University campus and Furtwängler Park, a remnant of the university's old botanical gardens. The Kollegienkirche was built between 1696 and 1707 and completed the ensemble of university buildings. At the very top of the façade are four statues. In the center, the Virgin Mary stands on a crescent moon. Inside, the church is decorated with outstandingly high-quality stucco work: a Maria Immaculata is flanked by angels; It protrudes from the wall above the altar, forming a single whole with it. It is framed by the four evangelists. The altar arrangement is unique; originally, the Collegiate Church had no altar at all; the stone tabernacle stood alone. The altar was only restored to its present form in 1735. The altar scene was created by Josef Anton Pfaffinger; the Maria Immaculata, however, was created by Diego Francesco based on designs by Fischer von Erlach. Old Town Hall, Salzburg The Old Town Hall of Salzburg is a medieval building with a rococo façade. The city government now resides in Mirabell Palace. The building can be found on Kranzlmarkt, at the intersection of Getreidegasse and Sigmund-Haffner-Gasse, not far from the Old Market. The town hall has four floors, was built from natural stone (Salzburg conglomerate) and has stucco work on the outside façade. But the town hall would be just one of many medieval buildings in the old town of Salzburg - if its bell tower did not make it an important landmark. The house was originally built as a bourgeois residence. It dates back to the 14th century. In 1407, the city administration bought the building and used it as a court. The statue of Justitia above the entrance still bears witness to this today. The tower of the town hall served as a lookout point and clock tower. The clock mechanism that still sits in it today is probably the oldest in Austria. The golden age of the town hall was probably the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, until the Reformation and the resulting Peasants' War led to the Prince Archbishops restricting civic participation as much as possible. While Prince Archbishop Matthäus Lang was still under siege in the fortress, Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau reduced the Salzburg mayor ("Salt Mayor"?) to a representative figure without any significant power. This is also the reason why the town hall is much more modest than in comparably wealthy cities. The current design dates from the reign of Prince Archbishop Markus Sittikus and the years 1616 to 1618. The Lady Justice dates from this period, whereas the Rococo stucco was not made until 1772. In 1947 the city government moved into Mirabell Palace, but the Old Town Hall remained the property of the magistrate and is still used by them. Only the ground floor is rented out to businesses. In 2006, a pot full of gold coins from the 17th century was found buried in the basement of the town hall. It's constantly uphill but not very steep. A nice bike path that's easy to ride. There's a lot going on when the weather's nice and on weekends.

Salzburg's Old Town is unparalleled. Countless beautiful buildings and alleyways stand alongside impressive structures such as Salzburg Cathedral, St. Peter's Abbey Church, and, as the highlight, Hohensalzburg Fortress, which towers majestically above everything and can be seen from almost everywhere.
