Historicum 20 in Bad Arolsen offers a fascinating forum for actively exploring the history of the Oberes Alleefeld and its impact on the city in the 20th century. Located in a former barracks headquarters building, the documentation center presents a permanent exhibition on four key periods – the Principality, the Weimar Republic, the Nazi era, and the Belgian garrison. Changing presentations keep history alive and offer a wide range of events, lectures, and discussions, including those with contemporary witnesses. The museum has been open to the public since January 2012 and, on the ground floor, offers insights into the history of the Arolsen Archives as a center of humanitarian aid. The exhibition on the upper floor is thematically structured and covers various periods, from the royal residence to the celebrated garrison, and from the period of occupation to the friendship period. The Golden Wedding House, built in 1799 for Justice Friedrich Hagemann, was owned by five generations of the von Stockhausen family from 1825 onwards. The New Palace in Arolsen was built in the second half of the 18th century as a widow's residence for the Princesses of Waldeck. As with the Arolsen Residence Palace, the completed building was more modest than planned: of the three wings, only the central section was built. In the mid-19th century, Emma, widow of George II of Waldeck-Pyrmont († 1845), had the building remodeled in the Neoclassical style. Further renovations followed after the palace was destroyed in a fire in 1970. A special feature of the townscape is the Great Avenue, laid out in 1676. It runs approximately 1,600 meters east-west and once began at the Old Palace. It is planted in six rows with around 880 oak trees. Its shady layout attracts many walkers, especially in summer.
