The 1.6 km long, six-row avenue is based on the north-south axis of the castle. Even though most of the original 888 oaks have now been replaced, it forms an imposing line of sight through Bad Arolsen, which can be followed on wide footpaths and cycle paths.

A special feature of the townscape is the Great Avenue, laid out in 1676. It runs approximately 1,600 meters east-west and once began at the Old Palace. It is planted in six rows with around 880 oak trees. Its shady layout attracts many walkers, especially in summer. It was intended as a broad and prestigious connection between the palace and the Charlottenthal pleasure palace, which was demolished in 1725.
