The Düsterdiek Lowlands are a landscape consisting of meadows, fields, and wooded areas. You'll hardly find a house or farm building here. You're alone with yourself and nature. Unfortunately, you'll also hardly find a bench or anything similar for a quiet break.

The Kulturhof Westerbeck in Westerkappeln is a place where art and nature meet. The grounds, bordering the extensive "Düsterdieker Niederung" bird sanctuary, are an oasis of tranquility and an ideal destination for art and nature lovers. Spanning over 23,000 square meters, the area is designed like a natural paradise with forests, meadows, and water features. In addition to the permanent exhibition "The Sculptors of Zimbabwe," the gallery-café hosts monthly changing exhibitions by visual artists and events.

Conservation of wet meadow complexes, particularly with litter meadows or extensively used wet meadows, near-natural moors, silting zones of standing waters with sparse reed beds or sedge marshes, habitats without hazards such as overhead power lines, conservation of temporarily flooded depressions, wet arable areas and permanently water-bearing ditches, grass, reed and herbaceous borders, and conservation of undisturbed or at least low-disturbance breeding sites during the breeding season from 15 February to 15 August

The Düsterdieker Niederung Nature Reserve is one of the largest nature reserves in the Steinfurt district of North Rhine-Westphalia. The approximately 1,130.9-hectare area, which was declared a nature reserve in 1983, extends over the municipalities of Mettingen and Westerkappeln, north of the town of Westerkappeln. The reserve is part of the "Düsterdieker Niederung" EU bird sanctuary.
