The Düsterdieker Niederung nature reserve near Westerkappeln has been protected since 1983 with a good 1000 hectares.

Various habitats, predominantly wet meadows, heaths and dry sandy grasslands, can be found here. Accordingly, more than 30 endangered breeding bird species and over 100 threatened plant species feel at home here.

The grassland in the lowlands serves as a breeding ground for many endangered breeding bird species. These include lapwings, curlews, stonechats, meadow pipits and quails. Rare bird species such as the red kite, Montagu's harrier and marsh harrier also use the protected area, as do migratory bird species such as arctic geese, ducks, Bewick's swans and whooper swans.
