West of Kittlitz lies the "Kittlitzer Hofsee and Surroundings" nature reserve. With the Hofsee lake, its lowland meadows and alder groves along the Kittlitzer Bach, and the adjacent Eichhorst, it forms an ideal habitat and refuge for wild boar, roe deer, and breeding cranes, for example. The Kittlitzer Bach connects both natural areas west and east of Kittlitz. It flows through the lowland meadows and likely gave Kittlitz its name. There is a beautiful rest area and an observation tower directly at the Hofsee in Kittlitz.

The "Kittlitzer Hofsee and surroundings" is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein communities of Kittlitz and Salem in the district of Herzogtum Lauenburg. The 178-hectare NSG, designated in 2008, is a central component of the Schaalsee landscape, a cross-border nature conservation project with nationwide significance. The area is an important link in a chain of protected areas in the "Green Belt" along the former "German-German border" and is also part of the "NATURA 2000" network, which links outstanding protected areas across Europe. Due to extensive land purchases by the Schaalsee-Landschaft special purpose association and the willingness of the Herzogtum Lauenburg district and WWF Germany to provide land, larger parts of the landscape are permanently secured for nature conservation. These are generally not used or only used very extensively.
